Why the dachshund comments on everything

It is not a broken alarm. It is an earth dog that still has a job: to warn. You educate the volume; you do not delete the breed.

The dachshund was selected to go into a den and let you know, from underground, that something was there. That job stayed in the voice. In a block of flats it becomes the doorbell, the lift, the cat on the sill, the courier. That is not “a bad character”. It is a born commentator. Your work is to teach it when the comment is over.

What works, in practice

  • Go and look together: “yes, it is the neighbour.” Then go back to something else. A dog that barks alone, with no ending, continues.
  • Do not shout over it. To the dog that is a duet.
  • Give it a job after the alarm: hidden kibble, a rug to search. The voice drops when the nose switches on.
  • Close the curtains on the busiest view if it is barking at the whole street from the window.

A silent dachshund is not a trained dachshund. It is a switched-off dachshund. We are looking for the first, not the second.
