Leaving a dachshund home alone

It bonds hard. This is not the right breed for a house empty all day. You can teach absence: you do it from puppyhood, in small doses.

The dachshund chooses its people and stays close. That is a quality in a family. It becomes a problem if the plan is “I’ll leave it from nine to seven, it will sleep.” It will sleep, yes, if it has learned that you come back. If the first Monday at work is also the first long absence, it does not sleep: it searches, cries, chews, or shuts down.

  1. 01

    Start with three minutes

Go out, close the door, come back without a party. Then five. Then ten. The dog learns the return, not the speech.

  2. 02

    A dull, safe corner

No open stairs, no cables, no “the whole house to itself” as a puppy. A space where it cannot hurt itself.

  3. 03

    No theatrical goodbyes

The more of a scene you make at the door, the more the door becomes an event. Leave as you would go to the kitchen.

Puppy
Short absences, more outings, no eight-hour days.
Settled adult
A few hours are sustainable if the day also includes you.
Two dogs
They help, but they do not replace people.
Signals
Drooling, destruction, howling: you shorten the time again, you do not “build character”.
