Walking a dachshund on the lead

The nose goes to the ground, the body is low, and the walk is not a parade. That is fine. You teach rhythm; you do not switch the dog off.

Anyone expecting a dachshund to walk at heel like a sheepdog will be disappointed. This is an earth dog: the interesting world sits ten centimetres above the soil. A good walk is one in which the dog sniffs, moves, stops, starts again. What you ask is that every outing does not become a fight, and that the lead is not used as an argument.

Simple kit

  • A harness that does not pull on the neck: the dachshund has a short neck and does not need pressure there.
  • A lead of about a metre and a half, not a flexi. A flexi teaches pulling.
  • No harsh “anti-pull” gear on a puppy: first you teach it to follow, then you refine.
  1. 01

Leave when it is already a little tired at home

Two minutes of play first, then you go out. A puppy that explodes at the door will always pull.

  2. 02

    When it pulls, you stop

Do not run after it, do not scold. Become a tree. Move again when the lead is soft.

  3. 03

Let it sniff — you decide when

Three stops you have chosen are worth more than twenty minutes of “come on, come on”.
