Manchester’s reputation for rain is not entirely unfair, and any dachshund owner here soon keeps a towel by the door. Heaton Park in the north of the city offers wide open grass and woodland, while canal towpaths thread through the centre and out into the suburbs. Towpaths are flat and easy on a long back, but keep the dog on a short lead near the water’s edge and around cyclists. Converted mills and city-centre flats come with plenty of stairs, so lift a young pup.

Questions
How do I keep a dachshund comfortable in Manchester’s wet weather?
A lightweight waterproof coat helps a smooth-haired dachshund, whose low belly gets soaked quickly on wet pavements. Dry the underside and paws after every walk to prevent chill and sore skin. Long-haired dogs need a quick comb once dry, as mud collects in the feathering.
