Life with a dachshund

When the dachshund grows old

It does not become another dog. It becomes slower, more selective, more attached. You adapt the house; you do not ask for the puppy of ten years ago.

An old dachshund sleeps more, chooses two people, and has firm views on cold and on stairs. It has not “soured”. It is a dog that has worked a lifetime with that back and that nose. Tenderness, here, is practical: weight watched even more closely, shorter outings, a lower bed, a vet who already knows it.

Weight
In old age, an extra few hundred grams show sooner. You recount the bowl; you do not “let it go”.
Stairs
What was acceptable as an adult comes off at twelve. Arms or a ramp.
Sleep
A warm corner, off the traffic. It wakes if you keep moving it.
Visits
A trusted vet is worth more than any article, including this one.

Growing old with a dachshund is going on speaking to it as you always have. Only a little more slowly, and a little closer.
