Life with a dachshund
A second dachshund in the house
Two keep each other company, it is true. They also keep each other company in bad habits. You bring the second when the first is already a dog, not a lost puppy.
The sentence almost always arrives after a year: “we would like another, so it is not alone.” Sometimes that is the right choice. A settled, house-trained adult that already manages a few hours alone will take a puppy better than a dog that is still learning everything. Two puppies together look like a solution: they are two questions at the same time.
How to introduce them
- Outdoors, on the ground, both on a soft lead. Not in your arms, not on the resident’s sofa.
- The puppy has its own place to eat and sleep. The first dog is not required to “be the mother”.
- Jealousy is managed with turns, not with “they love each other really”. Dachshunds remember small injustices.
The second dachshund is not there to repair the first one’s loneliness. It is there if you still have space, time and a little voice left for two.
