Sofa and bed: you decide at once
Not a question of affection. A question of the back, and of a rule you will not undo at three years old.
A dachshund puppy on the sofa is a tender photograph. The same dog, two years later, jumping down ten times an evening is load on the spine. You may lift it up. You may keep it on the floor. What you may not do is “see how it goes”. The dachshund remembers the exception, not the speech you gave on Monday.
If it comes up
- It comes up in your arms, or on a low step. Not with a jump.
- It comes down the same way. Always. Even at two in the morning.
- A blanket of its own on the sofa: that place, not the whole room.
If it stays down
- A proper bed, in the same corner, from the start.
- Nobody who “just this once” lifts it when it cries.
- Contact is still there: in your arms, on the rug, in the bedroom if it sleeps there.
Affection is not the height of the cushion. It is how you pick the dog up, every time.
