Life with a dachshund

Travelling with a dachshund

It travels willingly if the crate is a den, not a surprise. Car, train, plane: you decide beforehand, with the papers in your pocket.

Our dogs learn the car as puppies, because kennel life includes calm journeys, not a single “first time” as adults. The same principle holds in your home. An open crate in the sitting room, two minutes with the engine on in the yard, a short stop: the long trip is only the sum of short rehearsals. A dachshund that is sick every time is not “just like that”. It is a dog to whom motion arrived all at once.

Car
A secured crate or a guard. Never loose on the seat, never in the driver’s lap.
Stops
Every two hours you get out, drink, toilet. You do not “just get there”.
Train
Crate and the operator’s rules. You ask beforehand, not on the platform.
Plane
Cabin or hold depends on weight, airline and route. You check; you do not invent.

The calmest journey is the one in which the dog already knows the car will stop, and that you are still there.
