Life with a dachshund

Cats, other dogs, the home that is already there

The dachshund arrives with an earth-dog nose and an opinion. You introduce it on the ground, with time, not in an afternoon of trials.

A house cat is not “the older sibling”. An adult dog is not the babysitter. A dachshund puppy comes in low, fast, and wants to know who owns the smell. If you throw it into the middle, someone is frightened — and the fear stays. You do it outdoors, or in a room with an exit, everyone on the floor, everyone on a soft lead if needed. Then you shorten the distance over days, not minutes.

With a cat

  • The cat always has a table or a room of its own.
  • No chasing “as a game”. You stop the puppy.

With the other dog

  • Separate bowls, separate beds, at least at first.
  • The resident is not required to “be the mother”. That is you.
