Dachshunds and children: clear rules, no panic

It can be a wonderful dog in a family with children. On one condition: the adults lead, and nobody treats it as a low toy.

The question always arrives with a thread of fear: “is it good with children?” Often yes. The dachshund is affectionate, present, and tends to treat the people in the house as its whole world. What it will not tolerate is being handled at random, lifted badly, chased, or used as a sofa. That is not meanness: it is a short dog, with a back that needs respect, and a character that dislikes surprises.

Who teaches whom

It is not the puppy that must “get used to children”. It is the children who learn how to live with a dog. A four-year-old cannot be in charge. You need an adult who picks the puppy up properly, who stops the game when it becomes too much, and who keeps a corner where the dog can withdraw without being followed.

  1. 01

    Hands under chest and hindquarters

Never lift it by the armpits. Never let the back end hang. You explain it once, and you repeat it every time.

  2. 02

    No chasing

The game ends when the dog walks away. If a child follows, you stop the child, not the dog.

  3. 03

    A place of its own

An open bed or crate: nobody goes in, nobody pulls, nobody “cuddles by force”.

A dachshund does not need perfect children. It needs present adults.
