Feeding

Treats and table scraps

A scrap of cheese, for a miniature, is not a term of endearment. It is part of dinner. You count it, or the back will.

A dachshund learns in two evenings who, at the table, gives in. Then that person becomes its job. It is not hunger: it is a trade. Treats have a place, for training and for the bond. Leftovers almost never do. The difference is that you decide the first; the dog under the cloth decides the second.

Makes sense

  • A small treat, weighed into the day’s ration.
  • The same cue, the same voice, the same moment.

Does not

  • Cheese “because it is only a bit”.
  • Bread, sauce, chicken bones, chocolate, grapes: no — and that is the vet, not the internet.

Loving it at the table means keeping it lean. The other way looks kinder, and lasts less.
