Care

Teeth, ears, nails: everyday care

You do not need a salon. You need three short gestures, done often, from puppyhood. A dachshund handled calmly when small will let you do it when grown.

Families wait for “grooming day” and then discover a dog that will not have hands in its mouth. That is normal: nobody tried earlier. Everyday care of a dachshund is unspectacular. You touch the teeth, you look into an ear, you shorten the nails before they become a problem. Five minutes, twice a week, is worth more than a fight every two months.

  1. 01

    Teeth

Start with a clean finger on the gums, then a soft brush. Tartar arrives early on this breed if you wait “until it is grown”.

  2. 02

    Ears

You look; you do not dig. A strong smell, redness, a lot of wax: the vet. A cotton bud pushed deep is not an act of love.

  3. 03

    Nails

If you hear clicking on the floor, they are long. Cut little, often. A long nail changes the stance, and the stance reaches the back.

At home

  • Same time, same room, same low voice.
  • A small treat at the end, not during the struggle.
  • If it refuses one day, try tomorrow: you do not win by force.

At the vet

  • Heavy breath, red gums, a tooth that hurts.
  • A tilted head, a hot ear, a dog that scratches without stopping.
  • A broken or bleeding nail: you do not “wait for it to pass”.
