Care

Summer and winter with a dachshund

The belly is low, the muzzle is close to the tarmac, and the coat is not a mountain jacket. They adapt, if you adapt the clock.

In summer a dachshund walks a few centimetres above the tarmac. What reaches your ankles reaches its chest and feet. In winter the same low belly takes damp, mud and salt. It is not a fragile breed: it is a breed close to the ground. You go out early, you go out late, and you look at the ground before you look at the clock.

When it is hot

  • Short walks in the cooler hours.
  • Water always — a parked car in the shade is not enough if the air is still.
  • Smooth coats feel the sun more; long coats hold damp heat.

When it is cold

  • A coat makes sense on a smooth, less so on a wire.
  • You dry the belly when you come in, not “it will warm up”.
  • Road salt irritates the pads: a cloth by the door solves a lot.
