Care

Smooth, long, wire: what changes at home

Size decides the body. Coat decides your weeks: how much you brush, how much dirt you bring in, and sometimes the temperament too.

People often choose colour first, then size, and the coat arrives last, like a detail. At home it is the other way around. A smooth coat dries in ten minutes. A long coat holds water, grass and mud in the feathering. A wire coat needs stripping, not clipping “because it is summer”. Better to know that before the first winter, not after.

Smooth
Little work. A damp cloth, an eye on the skin, that is enough.
Long
Brush behind the ears, the chest and the tail. Mats arrive quietly.
Wire
Periodic stripping by someone who knows. Clippers change the coat; they do not “tidy” it.
Character
The wire, with us, is often more exuberant. That is not a textbook rule: it is what we see.

It is not only looks

A poorly kept coat itches, holds damp, and makes the dog scratch. A well kept coat is part of health, like the nails. If you are unsure which variety would live better in your life — not in the photograph — talk to us before you choose the puppy.

The loveliest coat is the one you can still maintain in January, not the one you liked in July.
